The following information is about Cyclamate.

Cyclamate Defined

A sweetener which is 30 times sweeter than sucrose, calorie free and heat stable and works synergistically with other sweeteners. It is approved for tabletop use in Canada and more than 50 countries in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa. Since 1970, however, the use of cyclamate has been banned in the United States on the basis of a study that suggested that cyclamates may be related to the development of bladder tumors in rats. Although 75 subsequent studies have failed to show that cyclamate is carcinogenic, the sweetener has yet to be reapproved for use in the United States.

  • Bring Back Cyclamate!: Children of the late 60s had a shared habit that was wrested from them by our oh-so-protecti ve government. The FDA banned the additive in 1969. As subsequent studies have not shown there to be a significant risk to humans, there is no reason to keep the substance banned.

  • Cyclamate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Cyclamate is 30?50 times sweeter than sugar (depending on concentration; it is not a linear relationship), making it the least potent of the commercially used artificial sweeteners. Some people find it to have an unpleasant aftertaste, but generally less so than saccharin or acesulfame potassium. It is often used synergisticall y with other artificial sweeteners, especially saccharin; the mixture of 10 parts cyclamate to 1 part saccharin is common and masks the off-tastes of both sweeteners. It is less expensive than most sweeteners, including sucralose, and is stable under heating.
